When I was young, my bowing arm gave me (and my teacher) a lot of grief. My elbow was too high, my joints were stiff and I tired easily. Thankfully, there came a day when what my teacher had been telling me all along finally clicked. What a tremendous difference that made to my playing!
In college, I studied string pedagogy and did extensive research on various teaching methods focusing specifically on the relationship between body motion and violin playing. As I experimented with different methodologies, I learned that while certain laws of motion are universal, it is important to be prepared to tackle problems from a variety of angles. What works for one student might not work for another. I think the fact that it took me so long to learn certain skills as a youth, helped make me a more thoughtful and effective teacher today. I love the challenge of finding solutions to problems and of playing beautiful music at the same time.
I have taught at the university level, in public and private schools, and in my own private studio. I served on the board of the San Francisco Section of the American String Teachers Association for the last 12 years holding various roles including President and Solo Competition Chair.
